The historic town of Stein am Rhein is located in a splendid landscape
offering stunning views up and down the River Rhine of such sights as
the Werd Islands, the Priory of Wagenhausen or the well-preserved
Fortress of Hohenklingen set in rolling, hilly countryside.
The old
town centre, which is surrounded by modern residential districts, is
exceptionally homogeneous and complete. It is characterised by striking
mediaeval buildings such as the Stadtkirche (City Church), the former
Monastery of St. Georgen, burghers' houses, gates and towers, as well as
buildings dating from the early modern age, including the Rathaus (Town
Hall) and the Zeughaus (Arsenal).
The old alleyways are a mixture
of burghers' houses featuring eaves and gables, painted façades, ornate
half-timbered constructions, precipitous stepped gables and distinctive
oriel windows. The district on the left bank of the River Rhine also has
several sights to offer: remains of the Roman fort, the Burg Church
with its extraordinary gothic frescoes, and the picturesque old houses
of fishermen and mariners.
