Humanitarian action has to go from the traditional fundraising model to a model of investing in human capital

In a stars webinar on the future of humanitarian action, Dr. Peter MAURER, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), stressed that while conflict and violence has been the predominant driver of humanitarian needs in the past, climate change increasingly becomes an aggravating factor creating a perfect storm for humanitarian crises. In his view, the negotiation and maintenance of a neutral and impartial humanitarian space, financial innovation and digital transformation are some of the key challenges that the humanitarian sector has to overcome to respond effectively in the future. What gives him hope despite all these challenges is the resilience and innovative capacity of communities affected by humanitarian disasters – and what the ICRC and others can do as outsiders is to support this resilience of individuals and communities.
